Joe Alvarez is a specialist gut health dietitian with extensive experience in the management of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). He has supported hundreds of individuals to improve their digestive symptoms using evidence-based dietary and lifestyle strategies tailored to their individual needs. Joe works collaboratively with clients to develop clear, structured plans that support symptom management, confidence around food and long-term wellbeing.
Joe also supports individuals using GLP-1 medications for weight management, helping them navigate changes in appetite, eating patterns and nutritional needs while maintaining a balanced and sustainable approach to food.
In addition, Joe has a specialist interest in supporting women’s health and clients going through the menopause, guiding them through this significant life change.
Alongside his specialist gut health work, Joe is passionate about helping people develop a positive relationship with food and greater confidence and flexibility around eating. He supports individuals who may be experiencing a difficult relationship with food, offering compassionate, non-judgemental guidance to reduce food-related anxiety and develop healthier, more trusting eating habits.
As a male dietitian working in a predominantly female profession, Joe is particularly passionate about men’s health and improving men’s access to and engagement with healthcare. He recognises that men can sometimes be less likely to seek support with their health or discuss concerns around food, weight, digestion and lifestyle. Joe is passionate about creating a welcoming, non-judgemental environment where men feel comfortable discussing these issues and can access evidence-based advice without stigma or judgement.
Living with IBS himself, Joe brings a strong personal understanding of the impact digestive symptoms can have on everyday life. This experience informs his compassionate and individualised approach to care, recognising that no two people respond to food, stress or lifestyle factors in the same way. Joe combines clinical expertise with practical, realistic strategies to help clients regain control, feel more confident around food and improve their quality of life.
Joe trained in Nutrition at the University of Nottingham before completing postgraduate training in Dietetics at the University of Chester, qualifying as a registered dietitian. He has also been involved in research and recently contributed to the latest update of the national IBS guidelines. He currently works as a dietitian in the NHS in London and also sees clients through The Gut Health Clinic, where consultations are delivered online.
Joe is committed to delivering inclusive, evidence-based and patient-centred care in a safe and supportive environment. He is fluent in Spanish and offers an affirming and respectful space for LGBTQ+ clients, helping people feel heard, empowered and confident in managing their gut health and relationship with food as part of everyday life.
