I first saw Dr Megan on ‘This Morning’ and soon started following her on social media. When I first started learning about the importance of gut microbiome I felt quite worried as I have no colon, I thought I had no hope! My consultant explained that the microbiota normally present in a colon recolonise the small bowel and he was sure I’d benefit from following the principles of Dr. Megan’s regime. I took the principles and adapted them to what my body could tolerate.
After educating myself with the help of Dr. Megan, I had the confidence to introduce foods that actually nourished me. I gradually introduced a wider variety of plant food where possible and paid much more attention to nourishing my gut microbiome.
Since making these changes I’ve noticed a genuine improvement in my overall health and wellbeing. I still have significant restrictions but I’ve found that these small and sustainable changes have made a positive difference to my health and my life.
When I first developed the fistula, I felt my life was over and how could I ever survive with such severe damage to my bowel. However 11 years on things have improved dramatically and one of the fistulae openings has actually closed which is remarkable.
I hope I demonstrate how resilient we are! I am coping with both a stoma and a fistula plus supporting and enhancing my gut health through Dr. Megan’s dietary principles which is, in turn, keeping me as well as possible. I am so grateful.
